What is Autism?

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world. It is called a “spectrum” because it includes a wide range of characteristics and abilities, which can vary greatly from person to person.

People with autism may have differences in social skills, communication, and behavior. Some might have strong interests or routines, and many can have unique strengths and talents. Autism is not a disease—it’s a different way of experiencing life.

How is Autism Diagnosed?

There is no single medical test for autism. Instead, diagnosis involves careful observation and assessment by healthcare professionals, usually specialists like psychologists, developmental pediatricians, or neurologists.

The process often includes:

  • Developmental Screening: Doctors check if a child is meeting communication, social, and behavioral milestones.

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: This involves detailed observations and interviews with the person and family, along with questionnaires or formal tests to assess social skills, communication, and behavior.

  • Use of Diagnostic Criteria: Professionals use guidelines from manuals, like the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), to identify autism.

Diagnosis can happen in early childhood but sometimes occurs later if signs were missed or milder.

Early diagnosis is important because it helps provide the right support and interventions to help individuals thrive.
